Cheung Bo-Man (Simon Yam) used to be an elite in the police force. He was an idol among the younger police cadets for being an ace shooter, highly observant and a calm mind. My friend Tim and I watched this last night at the Dynasty. It was a lot of fun, and featured some notable performances, but more on that later.

Black Ransom/撕票風雲 tells the story of a veteran cop (Simon Yam) trying to figure out who is kidnapping local gang bosses and demanding ransom. More importantly, he wants to know why these people are being ransomed, since none of them are very wealthy (at least by local standards).

In a funny Hong Kong Movie Moment, it is a treat to watch Simon Yam, who portrayed kidnapper ‘Big Spender’ Cheung in Operation Billionaires/驚天大賊王, play a cop trying to catch kidnappers.

The film is completely genre-fulfilling, and at times has plot holes nearly big enough to fit the narrative’s monstrous logical lapses into: Why is it so easy to get past a police cordon in the movies? “No, that’s my father in there!” (with the bad guy shooting at each other and blowing stuff up) “Oh, go ahead, miss…

Or how about when the bad guy sends a photo of Simon’s daughter to him, and shortly thereafter Simon leaves her alone in their flat (he’s a widower) to go and catch the guy who sent the photo? “Ahhh, she’ll be fine,
There are a few of those, but even so, the film manages to entertain. It’s not designed to break new generic ground, and it doesn’t need to.

What sets this film apart for me, if in an admittedly limited fashion, is the performances by some of the characters. Simon Yam has become a very dependable presence, and his character seems very believable. Granted, it’s not a big stretch, but he brings a lot of believability to an aging detective raising a daughter alone while facing his growing irrelevance/age handicap at work.

This aspect of the film is handled with more sensitivity and depth than usual, such that there are some smaller roles by actors of yesteryear (their names escape me and I apologize) and its a nice surprise to see them. In addition, they act well in their roles.

After a near seven year odyssey, visionary director Peter Jackson concludes his epic “tour-de-force” telling of “The Lord of the Rings”. His three part epic has brought audiences to their feet as each chapter pushed the envelope on how long a feature film presentation could be.
Probably the biggest box office gamble in Hollywood history finally concludes. But is the final installment worth waiting for or is it just some halfling dropping a ring into molten lava?
The third chapter picks up close to the conclusion of last winter’s “The Two Towers”. Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) are still being escorted by the waif and tormented Gollum (Andy Serkis) deep into enemy territory as the stranglehold of evil still threatens to overcome Frodo.
Meanwhile, Gandalf (Ian McKellan), Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) come upon Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd) after the defeat of Saruman. The heroes return to Rohan where they are welcomed by King Theoden (Bernard Hill) and Eowyn (Miranda Otto).
But rising ever so quickly, the evil forces of Sauron look towards the weakening kingdom of Gondor for an epic defeat. Gondor’s capital Minas Tirith, homeland of fallen comrade Boromir (Sean Bean), is a classic warrior based city which has seen its powerful leadership wean with Boromir’s father and the kingdom’s steward, Denethor (John Noble).

If Gondor falls, the whole of Middle Earth will fall beside it. The heroes, the hobbits and the people of Rohan must once more lock swords with the evil of Sauron in hopes of securing of regal destiny for one of the heroes and the freedom of Middle Earth.
Can one small insignificant hobbit finally achieve his destiny? Can the forces of Sauron finally be destroyed? It comes down to this free-for-all and may the best man, woman, elf, dwarf, orc or hobbit win.

Peter Jackson’s conclusion is as long and drawn out as his previous films. Jackson begins his third chapter with a lot of slow key story points and eventually emerges into the epic battle for Minas Tirith. This battle is probably the best battle of the trilogy and is utter magic. The problem with this sequence being so good is that overshadows a lot of the rest of the film.
The struggle between Sam and Gollum is brilliant as Astin shows range he hasn’t used since the under-appreciated “Rudy”. Sean Astin’s Sam is a crowning achievement in this film. He so deserves an Oscar nomination for his powerful performance. He brings that character to another level beyond that of any hobbit in the film.
The Andy Serkis-Gollum CGI creation keeps getting more and more precious. (Please, forgive the pun!) I also loved the CGI creation of the giant spider. It was seamless and the whole sequence was amazing.
I also really enjoyed the separation of Merry and Pippin. It really allowed for each actor to show a different side of the hobbits. Each of their individual storylines was fun and it made for a more interesting journey this time around. I always felt they were under used and were insignificant compared to Sam and Frodo.

My biggest concern with the film was the ending. The film reaches about 7 different conclusions before the end credits. Each ending felt longer than the next because there was no flow or cohesion as we see a lot more than was needed. We love these characters but did we really need that extra 30 minutes?
I love the world of Middle Earth and all that dwell there. Peter Jackson has done what no other filmmaker ever dreamed of accomplishing with this project. Thanks, Pete for a wonderful journey

Following the characters' introductions there is nowhere for this story to go as Campion relies solely on the poetry of Keats to sell the film's emotional core. Whether Keats and Brawne are finishing each other's sentences or simply reciting poetry aloud over long walks in the forest, the sap from this material is murky and deep and turned me off completely. The final hour of this two-hour dramaturgy had me looking at my watch every 5-10 minutes, anxious for it all to end. I haven't experienced a romance that annoyed me this much since 2004's The Notebook, and I would even say that mess of a film would be more welcome at this point.
Much has been made about Cornish's performance as Fanny Brawne and she was perfectly fine in my opinion, but nothing to write home about. Then again, that may be because seeing her crying in the corner while surrounded by dead butterflies was just too much for me to handle. Ben Whishaw as Keats is also gaining attention, but to say his quiet performance is anything more than slightly above average is a drastic exaggeration.

Set during China’s Tang Dynasty, two robbers enter the a seemingly tranquil village where they encounter a beautiful woman, a group of soldiers, and a village leader scheming to kill the two men.

A pair of amoral thieves end up defending a tiny village they initially came to pilfer in “The Robbers,” a rambunctious black comedy in period duds that plays like a Chinese riff on “Seven Samurai.” More ironic than knockabout in its humor, and packing an earthy punch in its action sequences, this is an intelligent crowdpleaser with some limited commercial potential beyond East Asia, especially if platformed at Western fests.

In his second feature, self-trained filmmaker Yang Shupeng (aka Leon Yang) delivers on the promise shown in his 2007 WWII drama, “The Cold Flame,” especially in his handling of actors and mood. Yang’s offhandedly witty script — whose flavor was not fully reflected in the subtitles on the print caught — is brought vividly to life by leads Hu Jun and Jiang Wu, whose screen chemistry holds the movie together.Clever editing manages to pack a lot into the tight running time without any feeling of haste, and an excellent score (part orchestral, part Beijing Opera-like) binds the film’s several moods together. Shooting in an actual (redressed) village in Zhejiang province, helmer Yang gets the most out of the landscape in a down-and-dirty way, as well as plenty of physical oomph in the battles with the soldiery.

BUSAN, South Korea — A Tang Dynasty village is the setting for Yang Shupeng’s “The Robbers,” a confused and mostly pointless action-comedy-drama about two professional thieves unwittingly coming to the defense of a community being harassed by soldiers. Almost anything from Mainland China is a hot property these days, and the presence of star Hu Jun (”Red Cliff,” “Lan Yu”) could help sell it to art house markets. For the most part, however, this is festival stuff, and not nearly arty enough for some. Anyone looking for the second coming of “Hero” is advised to look elsewhere.

Xue Shi San (Hu Jun) and Chen Liu (Jiang Wu) are partners in crime who show up at Ma Qi’s home asking for water. They claim they’re passing hunters but eventually show their true thieving colors. As they’re about to make off with some booty, a squad of soldiers passes through, and in a bid to save Ma’s daughter Luo Niang, from rape, the duo fight them off. Now wanted men, Xue and Chen try to get away but are recaptured in order to be turned over to the next group of soldiers. There are more escape attempts and more debating within the town council such as it is before it’s discovered there is indeed honor among thieves, and Xue and Chen lead the villagers in their own defense-which fails miserably.

“The Robbers” swings between comedy, drama, action and romance (Chen falls in love with Luo Niang and tells the story in flashback), never quite settling on any one for any stretch of time. The result is a scattered, disjointed narrative that is unable to pull viewers in, peopled with flat, one-dimensional characters that are hard to empathize with. Many of the themes Yang explores are common to Chinese cinema (loyalty, brotherhood, wealth above all else) and so expectations aren’t shaken up on that front. But if Yang has another message it doesn’t really come through.

The fight choreography, the cinematography, and the performances all lean toward bland. Hu has been better, and the supporting cast has little more than sketches to work from. And the constant mention of the grandness of the Tang never amounts to much. Nothing about “The Robbers” is incompetent — it’s just average.

Night after night, eccentric regulars gather at a quaint eating house located in the corner of a crossing in Tsukifune-cho. They include an old bookstore owner called “Master De Niro”, a young fruiterer who wishes to go to Irkutsk, a talkative hatter, and a struggling stage actress. “I”, an unspectacular man, is forced to buy a “double spatial migration device” and a book titled “The Strange tale of Thousand and One Red Pepper Night”, talks about outskirts of the universe, reminisces the “espresso machine”, and is asked to write a play. Gradually, these little events make “I” face his past and future

“No tricks and no gimmicks”, as one of the characters exclaim, but that’s not to say that this film has shoddy production values. Told in chapters probably to resemble the novel by Atsuhiro Yoshida from which this film is based upon, The Night of the Whirlwind Restaurant boasts some beautifully shot exteriors thanks to the wintry Hokkaido environment, and fuzzy warm interior tones reflective of the journey that the unnamed protagonist “I” (Norito Yashima) undertakes, where strangers in a standalone diner at Tsukifune become firm friends as the story unfolds.

However, the episodic treatment made it hard to identify deeply with the characters involved, most of whom are seemingly one-dimensional caricatures, making it quite an unfortunate, emotionally hollow story to follow. No doubt it’s a fantasy film with nostalgia a key theme where “I” reminisces about a father (Katsuhisa Namase) who supposedly vanished mysteriously. Flashbacks are used to bring his dad to life, in a time where magic was part and parcel of growing up, intricately tied to a barista and an expresso machine.

We don’t learn a lot about the protagonist, hence making his character a little bit of an enigma. His occupation is relatively strange too, studying artificial rainfall, so much so that he’s viewed as a “sensei” expert in a niche field. We also learn that he has a knack as a playwright, and these abilities opened up doors of friendship opportunities with the other diners. They all have their respective stories to tell, such as the aspiring actress (Sarara Tsukifune) wishing that “I” writes a role for her, and a talky mad hatter cum story-teller (Atomu Shimojo) trying to pass off a pedometer as a breakthrough fantasy item called the Binary Space Transporter, but these do not add further dimensions to these characters.

The more powerful narrative thread here happens to be on the relationship between the protagonist and his father, rather than the budding promise of a relationship with the actress which got hinted at. There’s a sense of longing for the days gone past with moments in the present which triggers the reminiscence, given the impact that that his dad had on an impressionable kid. Director Tetsuo Shinohara had this angle down pat perfectly, together with the beautifully crafted visuals in this adult fantasy tale.
As mentioned, the film still didn’t work for me as I found the little episodes doing little favours to the myriad of characters with whom I wanted to get acquainted with, though I suspect that fans of the original novel may take to the film a lot more with the thrill of seeing their literary characters being fleshed out, ripe for comparison.

Wu Jia Qian (Kelly Lin) has just opened a marketing company in Shanghai but the business has been going rather slow and one day she manages to meet up and have discussion with a local rich entrepreneur Zeng Tian Gao (Sun Hong Lei). Seeing that he desperately needs to transform his rustic image in order to woo Fang Na, he decides to employ Wu as his personal image consultant. In the beginning Wu uses corporate punishment to correct his smoking habit and holds separate lectures to teach him from astronomy to geography as well as allowing him to learn a variety of upper-class hobbies.

The main thing is Wu wants Zeng to strike a balance both inside and outside. Wu’s connection with Zeng attracted Hong Kong paparazzi photographing them together and created a scandal in her hometown, assuming that she had divorced from her current husband and remarried with Zeng. Upon hearing the news Wu decides to flee from Shanghai and get a fresh air in a foreign country.

In the meantime Zeng is applying all the techniques that had been taught by Wu to pursue Fang Na, including discarding his old-fashioned clothes. Her techniques worked and the happy Zeng is finally able to make Fang Na his girlfriend. When Wu returns from foreign trip she discovers that Zeng has transformed himself into a prince charming and is dating Fang Na. But inside Zeng’s heart she has fallen for Wu and now must decide which woman he really wants.
