Hindi Movie Review:
What do you do with a film which promises a lot but delivers not even on one count? Let’s just command – disappear! I would have liked to end it at this, but moralistic grounds do not permit me from giving up on my review.
‘World Cupp 2011’ promises to expose the dark side of cricket, betting and the underworld nexus. It is about the national team captain Ravi Indulkar (Ravi Kapoor) who throws away a match, gets caught, loses everything he has and then finally makes it back after the ban. It could have been an emotional story of a disgraced person getting back his pride but the film absolutely lacks screenplay. The director tries telling too many things and finally not managing to convey anything at all. Plus there is an extreme lack of attention to details – or rather overlooking all these for the sake of convenience of the story. Now when were players allowed to have their mobile phones on field? And the kid brother does not grow in four years – remains just six-year-old! There is absolute lack of research on cricket (despite Kapoor himself claiming once that he was a cricketer) and efforts to get the body language right for all players. And since when did the national team physiotherapist dress in fancy clothes in the stands?
The woe is not just the script. Experienced people like cinematographer Ashok Mehta also have done a shabby job. So have the editor and music director. Funnily, Aadesh Shrivastava makes his screen appearance in a song which is a crass attempt to do an ‘Aye Ganpat’ from ‘Shootout at Lokhandwala’.
And for the people who think B-graders like ‘World Cupp 2011’ could also have some skin show, the director decided to blur Kashmera Shah’s cleavage in an item number. At that moment many might just find themselves pulling their hair out due to frustration.
Performance-wise the film is a disaster. Ravi Kapoor lacks screen presence. The only thing good about the movie is probably Zakir Hussain who brings some smiles with his spontaneity.
The last straw to my frustration was when Team India is shown winning the World Cup and the scoreboard says ‘India Wins World Cupp’. They tempered with the name of the film, and now they temper with the actual spelling too! Maybe Ravi Kapoor could try an alternate profession rather than acting and direction. I suggest publicity – he did create a bit of controversy around the movie though. ‘World Cupp 2011’ almost looks like a school project by class 10 kids and can very well be avoided. Duck!
