               IRENE IN TIME 2009 MOVIE
Were it not for Tanna Frederick, Irene in Time, Henry Jaglom’s most recent indie effort, wouldn’t be nearly as watchable as it is. But that’s the brilliance of Jaglom. He’s a smart enough director to realize he has a good thing when he’s got it. That’s also the allure of Frederick, a talented, emotionally limitless actress who could easily exit Jaglom’s world, but seems so perfect in it.

Irene in Time tells the story of Irene (Frederick), a woman who is in search of a man who can live up to the image she’s created of her father. She goes on dates armed with tips and tricks she’s learned from relationships for dummies books. But what she’s really looking for is a man who has the same vision of her that her father once had.
Her father is out of the picture now. As we soon discover, he’s not necessarily the type of male companion Irene should be looking for. Still, she carries him with her into every aspect of her life, from her work as a singer to her interactions with peers to her often disastrous dating scenarios.

We never expect Irene to be cured of this pathological obsession with her father’s love, and Jaglom wants us to be. We are, however, expected to understand the complexities of father-daughter relationships, something that, as Jaglom portrays it, affect a woman’s life from birth to death.Frederick’s character is the hyperbolic manifestation of this idea, still daddy’s little girl even into her late-twenties. This makes Irene in Time a film where, once again, Frederick can flourish. As in Jaglom’s last feature, Hollywood Dreams, Frederick is given the opportunity to show her not inconsiderable emotional range. She wears the hard worn look of a woman old enough and smart enough to know better but is dizzyingly pulled back into her uncontrollable adolescent emotions.

Jaglom dedicates the film to his daughter, maybe as an apology, maybe as an acknowledgment of his role in whatever woman she has become. He’s not a director without an idea. But ever the indie filmmaker, Jaglom’s film feels unrefined, more so than most of the indies out there today. It still looks and feels like a film that you’d make with your friends over a few weekends.

With age, however, comes wisdom, and this 68-year-old maverick knows what he wants to say and how to say it. Finding and then working again with an actress as talented as Frederick, just proves that what he lacks in style, he more than makes up in shrewdness.
